“A SACRED CHRISTMAS,” by Garth Smith, G&D Productions, $15.99

Pianist Garth Smith has teamed with vocalists and choirs, a guitarist and a violinist for his new album, “A Sacred Christmas.”

Smith, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shares his take on 11 Christmas songs, with arrangements that not only highlights the piano but also his guest artist.

He draws on the talents of the One Voice Children’s Choir in “Sankta Lucia — A Swedish Carol.” Singer Calee Reed joins him on “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and guitarist Michael Dowdle on “Still, Still, Still.”

Violinist Melinda Call joins him for “Gesu Bambino,” and the Sun Valley Carolers sing in “I Wonder as I Wander.” Vocalist Lauren Sullivan is featured in “Heaven’s Hallelujah,” and Mattie June Millward is in “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Smith is the soloist in “For Unto Us a Child is Born,” “Away in a Manger,” “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” and “O Holy Night,” with intricate harmonies that are more than background music.

The resulting compilation is a collection of songs that celebrate the season with a balance of exuberance and reverence to help any home get into the Christmas spirit.

“A Sacred Christmas” is Smith’s fourth album and first holiday album.

Smith, a Brigham Young University graduate who now resides in California, is in Utah for firesides in Layton, Riverton and Farmington. He will also be a signings Dec. 8, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the American Fork Deseret Book store, 468 N. 990 West B2, and Dec. 9, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Salt Lake Downtown Deseret Book store, 45 W.
