La Jean Carruth, a researcher with the LDS Church History Department who has transcribed from shorthand notes many previously unpublished sermons of Brigham Young, will speak about the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at a birthday commemoration.

The Brigham Young Birthday Commemoration will be Thursday, June 1, at 7 p.m., at the Brigham Young Family Cemetery, 140 E. 1st Ave.

President Young was born June 1, 1801, in Whitingham, Vermont. He joined the LDS Church in 1832 and was called to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835, according to history.lds.org. He was sustained as president of the church on Dec. 27, 1847, and served for 30 years until his death in 1877.

The event, hosted by descendants of President Young, is free and open to the public.
